Fantastic Flaws

In a realistic world, the art of crafting is a mundane task where metal is forged together with wood and bone to create useful items. In a fantastic setting, crafting is so much more. There are many fantastic entities involved in the crafting process, entities not visible to the naked eye. There are diminutive elemental spirits that play and frollick inside the fire of the foundry, there are ancestral spirits inhabiting the tools and anvil of the craftsman and there are deities devoted to crafting and metals that look down upon the craftsman from their planar residence. The more complex the item being crafted is, there greater the chance that one of the world's fantastic inhabitants will notice.

Chance of gaining a Fantastic Flaw

The chance for an item to gain a fantastic flaw depends on the Craft DC of the item. If a powerful, complex item is crafted, then both spirits and gods are bound to notice, and a war will be waged between them in an attempt to influence the finished item. When crafting an item, determine to final Craft DC of it and refer to the table below.
